57 Darren Heath - F1 Photographer

Feb 15 by Peter Windsor

Like mechanics, F1 photographers are a breed apart.  They are both artists and artisans;  they live in the motor sport background, blending into a scenery that they themselves create;  and, most of the time, they must be so passionate about their world that they are prepared to work for nothing.  One such is Darren Heath, a genius I was fortunate to meet in the late 1990s, when we were all working at Haymarket's new monthly magazine, F1 Racing.  It was easy, teaming with Darren - just as I'd always had a smooth time with such snappers as Nigel Snowdon, David Phipps, Peter Cramer, Keith Sutton, Michael Cooper and Maurice Rowe:  my mediocre copy, I knew,  would inevitably be carried by the creativity of Darren Heath.  Today a freelance, with both editorial and commercial clients, Darren is roundly acknowledged as the....Fernando....of his industry.  Or, perhaps, the Lewis.  We shall see when we meet him in Episode 57.  Fresh from his head-turning exhibition in London, Darren will be talking us through some of his best works, his life, his loves and his taste for what is right in the world of Formula One - and, yes, for what is not so right.

Feb 10 by Peter Windsor

As the dusk falls at Jerez, Spain, bringing to an end the first F1 test session of the new season, Episode 56 looks back at the past four days of intense development work by the major teams.  Craig Scarborough will be giving us his impressions of the new Ferrari F2012, Sauber C31, Torro Rosso STR7 and Williams FW34 and will also be talking about a hot technical topic of 2012 - roll-hoops.  We also recorded the thoughts of Renault's Rob White on how the Championship-winning engine builders are facing the task of supplying four teams.  We reported live from Jerez at the start of the week, on Episode 55;  today's show brings the Jerez test to a conclusion.

Tfl-episode54-thumbnail 54 The Sahara Force India VJM05, live from Silverstone
Feb 03 by Peter Windsor

Episode 54 represents a milestone in the short life of The Flying Lap, for on this occasion we will be airing the show live from what will undoubtedly be a very chilly Silverstone - from the launch of the new Sahara Force India VJM05.  We'll be talking to some key SFI team members; examining the car with Craig Scarborough; and generally soaking-up the atmosphere of an F1 Team Launch, with plenty of questions to be answered from live viewers all over the world.  As well as procuring the biggest F1 sponsorship/investment deal of the past 12 months (thanks to their new association with Sahara, the massive Indian holding company until now best-known for its support of the national Indian cricket team) Force India made huge strides in 2011 against such opponents as AMG Mercedes, LotusF1 and WilliamsF1.  Paul di Resta raced sensationally through his debut season and in 2012 will be joined by the last man to put a Williams on the pole - Nico Hulkenberg.  And into the Third Driver slot steps one of the hottest young stars from the Ferrari Driver Academy - Jules Bianchi.

Feb 01 by Peter Windsor

The arrival of any  new McLaren F1 car is always a big occasion - but never more so than right now, on the eve of the 2012 World Championship.  Will Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button have the equipment they need to wrest the title from Red Bull Racing?  We'll have our first look at the new challenger when it is launched to the world's media at the stunning McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, Surrey, England, on the morning of Wednesday, February 1; and later that day, in Episode 53 of The Flying Lap, we'll be giving you our verdict, together with a report from the day's festivities.  Joining Peter Windsor in The Flying Lap studio will be our regular F1 technical expert, Craig Scarborough.  We'll be discussing all aspects of the car and the team and taking live questions from F1 fans all over the globe.
