Ferrari's Luca Baldisserri

A familiar face on the Ferrari pit wall - and the podii of the world - during the epic reign of Michael Schumacher, Luca Baldisserri is an engineer with a difference.  Now the guiding force behind the Ferrari Driver Academy - the F1 "university" of which every young driver with red blood in his veins would love to be a part, "Baldi"  has by default become one of the most influential men in motor sport.   Such promising stars as Sergio Perez and Jules Bianchi comprise the public face of the FDA - but there are younger, less-known drivers under Luca's supervision.  What does it take be a part of the FDA?  What does it mean to associated with one of the most widely-recognized brands in the world? And how does Luca view Michael these days - and the two current Ferrari drivers, Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa?  We talk about all this and more on Episode 48.

SHOW NOTES ANSWERED QUESTIONS
Raymond in Singapore | @raymondu999

Luca; as a driver coach now; how do you see the upturns in performance from Jenson Button and Sebastian Vettel? Fernando also seems to be like a fine wine that gets better with age…

Ewan Marshall | @www.twitter.com/ewanmarshall

Peter, what do you make of the WMSC’s changes to the overtaking rules?

How easy will that be to police? Either going to be impossible or an ever revolving door for the stewards in 2012?

Miran - Croatia | @mirandd9

Peter, can you explain who are the drivers that are paid in f1? How is that functioning right now? Are Buemi, di Resta getting a salary? When is a point when a driver that is sponsored and paying a seat, starts getting a salary? Please, can you explain that part of formula one? thanks

Raymond in Singapore | @raymondu999

Question for Mr. Baldisseri – if Ferrari’s 2 race seats were to be empty; and you had to pick any 2 drivers other than Felipe and Fernando to fill them, who would you pick if you could pick from the driver academy and the current grid? Who would you pick if you only could pick them from the grid?

How has the new Pirelli tyres; and the introduction of passing aids such as DRS and KERS, changed the face of strategising? Does the relative ease of passing nowadays mean you can go for the fastest tyre strategy; without worrying too much of track position (except in circuits such as Monaco)?

Given the cars today; you rarely see drivers making much of a difference in terms of pace; especially qualifying, even in the wet; and even in circuits such as Monaco. What can we do to change this situation?

Ewan Marshall | @www.twitter.com/ewanmarshall

Going on from pay-drivers and driver development schemes, do you think the over-bloated junior ladder has any influence?

Currently most talents being cherry picked from the likes of Formula Renault or the mainstay that is F3.

While there are plenty of talents in GP2 it seems many of them are being clouded by their immediate competitors or have reached a glass ceiling in terms of moving up.
Ewan Marshall | @www.twitter.com/ewanmarshall

Do you think McLaren will struggle if the free-for-all in spending was to resume? I personally suspect Ferrari and Red Bull to have the resources to spend freely, with Mercedes forced to follow suit.

So would McLaren have the same ability to do this due to a lack of manufacturer support?

And would the free-for-all really be good for Formula One? Surely it would only widen the gap from the front to the back?

Theodoros Greece

What do you think about a completely free technical regulations Formula 1 with each team having ecactly the same budget?
The only restrictions would be a steering wheel and 4 wheels.
You would have let’s say 20 sponsors, changing teams every race, so you would not be in a danger of a sponsor giving more money to one team.
So the sponsors will not be connected to any particular team, technical regulations will be free, budgets will be the same for everyone!
That would be the ideal Formula 1 in my opinion!

Miran - Croatia | @mirandd9

Please, can you shed some more light on the current situation with Bruno? Thanks

Chris Wright - Enterprise, Utah

Hi Peter, Do you think that the split in FOTA strengthens Bernie’s position in general on the “divide and conquer principle.” and if so, is this a good or a bad thing?

Ewan Marshall | @www.twitter.com/ewanmarshall

Do you have any memories of Peter Gethin?

Theodoros Greece

Wouldn’t it be better if FIA alloed drivers to drive freely than restricting their actions during overtaking moves?
Don’t you think that “one time lane change” thing makes the sport more artificial than currently is?

Matt USA

Any possible future link between Sebastian Vettel and Ferrari?

Michael Hogan, Plymouth, NH | @Superaudi59

If F1 is considered pinnacle of motor racing, why do we tie their Hands as far as money is concerned? Hard to be top and restrict access to money. What are your thoughts Peter?

Flavio

Peter, I’m pretty sure I know a driver or two who would have a sex change operation for the chance to drive a Ferrari in F1. Would that be acceptable to the FIA and Baldi?

Ewan Marshall | @www.twitter.com/ewanmarshall

How do you think Ferrari’s young driver development programme compares to that of Red Bull?

Rasmus from Estonia

Hi,

Not realy a question but an oppinion.
I have a feeling that rather than felipe having a problem with his driving per se, I think he could have sustained a minor injury 2009 hungaroring witch hit the “right” spot just to damage his balance or any other sensors in his brain witch hampers his driving. Doctors might have not found any damage as we dont have full understanding and technology of human body.
And as doctors say everything is ok felipe is searching flaws from himself and while not finding any answers makes him more and more frustrated as we have seen from TV.

Miran - Croatia | @mirandd9

Peter, can you explain who are the drivers that are paid in f1? How is that functioning right now? Are Buemi, di Resta(…) getting a salary? When is a point when a driver that is sponsored and paying a seat, starts getting a salary? Please, can you explain that part of formula one? thanks

Dead Man Woking USA

The WMSC today approved an ammendment to the F1 Sporting Regs stating that
“Drivers may no longer move back onto the racing line having moved off it to defend a position”.
What exactly do you think is meant by this and how will it affect the racing in 2012 and beyond?

mad79-romania

is there a racing driver from F1.who you wanted to drive for Ferrari, burt didnt,in the past not from 2000 on!

Joanne in Swindon

How much attention do teams pay to where F1 races are held? Was thinking of races that are on & then off for financial reasons, plus the situation in Bahrain.

Simon Stiel

What’s your view about the FIA Institute’s Young Driver Excellence Academy?

Graham in London | @TalkingaboutF1

I have a question for Luca Baldisseri about Italian drivers in F1, or rather about the lack of them.

We all know that Italy is a country wherein there is a lot of support and passion for F1. But no Italian driver has won an F1 world championship since 1953, and it’s been a long time it seems since we had a consistently front-running Italian F1 driver. What does Luca think the main reasons are for this? Are there particular difficulties and barriers that face young, upcoming Italian drivers that aren’t present to the same extent in other countries?

Stefan

To Luca: In what aspect the latest mental coaching work helps the drivers to improve and how do you approach mental training in your driver preparations?

2nd question: What is your opinion on the recent explosion in karting budgets? In the mid 90s there were reportedly 150 000 karting license, nowadays they are much less. How can Ferrari influence this trend where motorsport gets more and more exclusive?

Konstantinos Kouretas - Athens, Greece | @PhaethonF1

Q for Mr.Baldisserri:

Is Ferrari driving separate negotiations with Ecclestone about the new Concorde Agreement now that they left FOTA?

Is Ferrari going to join FOTA again if the team’s conditions are met?

Joanne in Swindon

With news that Mclaren is carbon neutral, how much attention do F1 teams take of environmental issues & how will F1 improve its credentials over the coming years?

Josh - Leeds, UK

Hi Luca

I was just wondering whether you saw having so many young talents waiting in the wings as a problem for F1 as some of these talents drivers won’t get an oppurtunity to get into F1 which they arguably deserve. In which case are you in favour of 3 car teams?

Thanks

Josh

Theo

Ciao Luca,
Do you think there is a possibility to see an Italian driver in the near future for Ferrari? Why don’t wee see Italian drivers in Ferrari? Is it the old dogma of “no Italians in Ferrari” or there is just a lack of talents in Italy nowadays?

Daf

Ciao Luca:)

How do you determine the drivers in your academy? What do you cherish the most amongst their qualities? Is intelligence or talent the most important quality in the modern racing driver?

Flo, Tyrol

Ciao Luca!

What do you look for in a young driver before proposing him for the Academy and about what do you care especially once he is driving there?

Mille Grazie

Ashley | @luxurytravelled

You have said Peter you would like testing to be more accessable to the fans… I went to Barcelona in February and it was nearly empty, even though the entry ticket was only €10. Do you think it just needs better advertising?

Michael Hogan, Plymouth, NH, USA | @SuperAudi59

4 Luca, how hard is it to get a ride in an F1 car today with lack of test days available?

Alex Goldschmidt | @Eyeofalexg1977

Ciao Luca! How do you feel Felipe has been coping with his unfortunate lack of form since his nasty accident at Hungary in 2009? It seems as if he’s lost his mojo, and yet again seems to be playing second fiddle to a former world champion. Do you think he’ll be back with a vengance next season?

Anders, Stockholm, Sweden. | @AndersF1

How important will the new 3 days of in season testing be?

Show notes still have to be added.

Dr. John Kirby (Nottingham, East Midlands) | @csljohnkirby

I was talking with two chairmen of major motor companies, and there reason for not being in F1 was the Ecclestone Daughters, the amount of money taken from the sport, but they would join a Manufactuer Run Formula series.

Dave in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma | @DaveinOkla

Peter what do you think of the Jos Verstappen story om Shuchmacher using illeagle traction control in 94?

Matt USA

Good luck to the guys on the last show of 2011 for the Flying Lap.

Matt USA

F 1 co-ordinated joint effort between F1 teams and commercial partners to not only produce future Formula One drivers but also to have a leisure aspect that creates an interest between the public and the sport.

Alex Goldschmidt | @Eyeofalexg1977

Just a good idea to see how teams like Ferrari are helping to encourage up and coming drivers that are looking to come into F1 such as Jules Bianchi, and see it from their perspective

Danny@Martigny (Switzerland)

The shows related in one way or another to the Scuderia are less interesting than the others.

Always the same stories and so on.

Wish you all a good evening.
